Tile maker, Ahmadabad
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a tile maker at Ahmadabad in Gujarat, taken by an unknown photographer in c. 1873, from the Archaeological Survey of India. This view shows the potter making the cylindrical pipes that will be cut in half to make pan-tiles and is one of a set of prints which were probably shown at an exhibition in Europe. The kumhar (potter) makes unglazed terracotta or earthenware pots for storage or for transporting water as well as bricks and tiles.
