Photograph of an unidentified square tomb with a dome, at Sind in Pakistan, taken by Henry Cousens in 1896, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections: Western India 1894-96. Muslim Arabs had already conquered parts of Sind as early as the 8th century. Over the succeeding centuries Arab influence diminished and Sind was brought under the control of the Khalji and Tughluq rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. After Timur's invasion in 1398 and the collapse of the Delhi Sultanate Sind was ruled by local chieftains. In the late 16th century the Mughal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) conquered Sind which was then incorporated into the empire.
