A caisson is a large water-tight case or chest, generally made of wrought iron, used in laying foundations of docks and bridges in deep water. Construction on the Victoria Dock began in 1885 when, due to the rising importance of Bombay as a centre of trade, approval was given to extend the relatively newly-built Prince's Dock.
