Photograph of the village of Teo from the 'Crofton Collection: Topographical and architectural views mostly in India', taken by an unknown photographer in the 1860s. The Spiti River flows fast through gorges and narrow valleys. The main valley splits into an eastern valley that connects to Ladakh and Tibet and a western valley that connects to Kinnaur and Kulu through high passes. Its location has made it a vital link in the Great Trans Himalayan trade route from Lhasa to Kashmir. Spiti is literally translated as the 'Middle Country' and is now a part of Himachal Pradesh. Many villages dot the rivers edge, including the small village of Teo.
