Village of Khanum, Upper Kunawar [Kinnaur].
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the village of Khanum in Upper Kinnaur, part of the 'Crofton Collection: Topographical and architectural views mostly in India', taken by an unknown photographer in the 1860s. Kinnaur is situated near the valley of Sutlej along the old trade route to Tibet; the Upper Kinnaur comprises the north-eastern part of the district between Pooh and Hangrang valley extending up to the modern border with Tibet. The village houses in the area are usually made of stone and have flat roofs that are then covered with earth. Many of the houses are two-storied with the ground floor used as a cattle shed and the upper floor for living purposes, as can be seen in this photograph.
