The capital of Kashmir, Srinagar is situated on Dal Lake and the River Jhelum which divides the town in two. In the Nineteenth Century the city was typified by canals and narrow lanes which proved an ideal setting for photographers interested in capturing picturesque views for a curious European audience. Many of the old timber houses with their distinctive sloping earth roofs survive today.
