Photograph from the Curzon Collection: 'Visit of His Excellency the Viceroy. Kotah, November, 1902' of the Chambal river and surrounding landscape at Kota, taken by P.A. Herzog and P. Higgins in 1902. The Chambal is Rajasthan’s largest river and flows in a wide sluggish stream through the plain at the city of Kota, which lies on the river’s east bank. The city and the fortified bastions surrounding it can be seen in the distance on the horizon. The iron pontoon bridge, built by the Public Works department, was the principal means of crossing the river except during the floods of the rainy season when it was replaced by a ferry. In the foreground the plain is thickly wooded with trees and brushwood.
