Photograph of the village of Sonamarg, Sind Valley, Kashmir, from the Macnabb Collection, taken by Samuel Bourne in 1865. Sonamarg ('Meadow of Gold') is located near Srinagar in the north of Kashmir, near Ladakh. The Sind is a tributary of the River Jhelum, and runs through the Sind Valley. The source of the Sind is traditionally considered to be the sacred Lake Gangbal on Harmukh Mountain. The river flows for sixty miles and joins the Jhelum at Lake Anchar at Ganderbal entering through a swampy delta.
