Photograph of the tombs at Batwa, near Ahmadabad in Gujarat, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s, from the Archaeological Survey of India. The tomb complex at Batwa, or Batura, is about six miles south of Ahmadabad. The saint Burhan-ud-Din Qutb-ul-Alam's tomb is on the left of this image and the tomb of one of his sons is on the right. Qutb-ul-Alam was influencial in the court of Ahmad Shah I (r.1411-42) and died in Batwa in 1452. His tomb stands on a platform with arched and vaulted aisles. The large central dome, raised on a second tier of arches, was once surrounded by four pavilions, or chhatris.
