General view from the north-east, looking towards the Jami Masjid, with Gwalior Fort on the skyline. Sited in what is now the Old City, the Jami Masjid was built in 1661 by Mutamad Khan in red and white sandstone. It is a building in late Mughal style with tall minarets, high central arch and pinnacled onion-shaped domes. The Jami Masjid, or Friday mosque, is the location for the weekly congregational prayers during which the 'khutba' or sermon is delivered to the gathered Muslim community on their holy day.
