Water mill for grinding rice
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a rice-mill in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmir, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. Water-powered mills like this one have been developed over centuries to grind rice, wheat, maize and to extract oils. In recent times mills such as these, locally known as gharats, have also been upgraded to produce hydro-electric power in the region. The modern state of Jammu and Kashmir is a Himalayan region in the north-western region of India.
