Photograph of washermen (dhobis) at work beside a river or pond in India, taken by Hooper & Western in c, 1870, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. After washing the clothes are laid out on the river bank to dry. This image is presumably one of the series of views which was shown first at the London Exhibition of 1871 and later at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873. The collection is mentioned on page 201 of John Forbes Watson's Vienna Universal Exhibition, 1873. A classified and descriptive catalogue of the Indian department (London, 1873), p. 201.
