This engraving is taken from Edward Long's 'The History of Jamaica' and depicts Jamaica's hot spring. The spring is located in Bath, St Thomas, and was first used in the late 17th century. There were numerous stories about how the spring was discovered, - some said it was found by Colonel Stanton, whilst others believed that a runaway slave first came across the warm waters. Regardless of how it was discovered, the healing properties of the waters were not disputed and people travelled long distances to bathe in them. In 1699 the spring and the land around it was sold to the Government for £400.
