Accompanying text for a plate from Richard Bridgens' 'West India Scenery?'. The plate depicts two enslaved men who are being punished for a misdemeanour by being placed in stocks. The type of stock in the print was designed so that when the offender was locked in there was a wooden plinth upon which to lie. Bridgens suggests that stocks like this one could also be useful when applying dressings and medicine to wounds.
