This plate is taken from 'West India Scenery' by Richard Bridgens, and illustrates the harvesting of the sugar canes on a plantation in Trinidad. The sugar canes took about 12 months to reach maturity and harvesting usually took place in January. Gangs of enslaved men, women and children were forced to work long hours in the fields to cultivate these crops. To the left of the illustration can be seen specimens of wild plantain.
