Accompanying text for a plate from Richard Bridgens' 'West India Scenery.' It depicts hogsheads of sugar being transported to the harbour at Port of Spain for shipping to Europe. There were relatively few bridges and the rapid rise of rivers after rainfall made the journey hazardous. The plate picture shows a bridge over the St Ann's river. In June 1831 the river suddenly rose 20 feet, causing devastation. The house in the background of the picture was known as Rose Hill and was the home of Edward Jackson, a well-known patron of the arts.
