Illustration from 'A tour through the Island of Jamaica, from the Western to the Eastern End, in the Year 1823,' by Cynric Williams, depicting the interior of an enslaved family's home. The dwelling was 40ft x 18ft, and was built from boards with a palm roof. The interior was divided into five smaller rooms: three for sleeping, a pantry and a large hall, which is illustrated in this print. The woman is cooking dinner whilst the man is smoking tobacco and resting in a hammock. She is cooking a meal of pickled crabs, salted fish and salted pork.
