This is the title page of James Mursell Phillippo's 'Jamaica: Its Past and Present State,' published in 1843. Phillippo was born in Dereham, Norfolk in 1798. He became a Baptist missionary and in 1823 travelled to Jamaica where he founded a number of schools and chapels in Spanish Town. After the abolition of slavery he helped to secure freehold land and set up villages such as Sligoville and Clarkson Town for the newly free populations. He remained in Jamaica until his death in 1879.
