This extract from Matthew Lewis' 'Journal of a West Indian Proprietor,' gives an insight into the homes of the plantation owners of Jamaica in the early 19th century. Lewis stayed in Cornwall House on the Cornwall estate. It was a single-storey wooden construction and consisted of a long gallery off which were situated the bedrooms and reception rooms. It also overlooked the plantation buildings.
