This portrait is taken from the frontispiece of the journal written by Lady Maria Nugent. Few details survive of her early life although it is known that she was born in 1771 in New Jersey. Her father was a Loyalist ? on the side of the British - during the War of Independence, and the family moved to England after peace had been declared. Maria married George Nugent in Belfast in 1797. The couple went to Jamaica in 1801 when Nugent was appointed Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in-Chief there.
