Accompanying text for a print taken from 'West Indian Scenery,' written and illustrated by Richard Bridgens. Since the enslaved populations on the plantations originated from many different parts of Africa and spoke many different languages, communication could be difficult. Singing, dancing and playing musical instruments provided the means to come together, to overcome language barriers, and to express shared cultural traditions ? although the slaves had few opportunities for relaxation from their back breaking work on the plantations.
