This is the accompanying text to a plate taken from Richard Bridgens' 'West India Scenery'. the plate depicts the Gulf of Paria in Trinidad, and is described by Bridgens as 'one of the most magnificent panoramas nature ever formed.' The mountains of Cumana provide a dramatic backdrop, with merchant vessels, small ships and canoes sailing in the foreground, and the white washed houses of the town standing out against the green of the mountains. The catholic cathedral on King's Street can be seen on the right of this plate, and the Protestant church dominates the town with its tall steeple on the left.
