This is the accompanying text for a plate depicting St Ann's, the residence of the Governor of Trinidad and Tobago. The building itself was not distinguished but it was set in the Botanic Gardens and had some of the most beautiful grounds on the island. The house was made of wood so that it could withstand earthquakes and was surrounded by a covered walkway, which provided a cool shaded area in the hottest part of the day. Inside, the building was spacious with public reception rooms at the front, a large fountain in the dining room, and the private quarters upstairs. To the right are the kitchen and servants' hall with the Chinese bathhouse on the extreme right.
