Slaves In Barbados

Author: Waller, John Augustine
Medium: Lithograph
Date: 1820
Illustration from John Augustine Waller's 'A Voyage in the West Indies' (published in 1820) depicting a slave village on a sugar plantation in the early 19th century. In the centre of the picture is a small hut which has been dissected to show the interior. To the right is a field gang working to chop down the sugar cane, watched by an overseer, and to the left is a group of men, women and children who are dancing and playing music. The works buildings can be seen in the background. Waller was an eminent surgeon who travelled to the Caribbean in 1807.
