Extract from the journal of Sir Henry Martin, taken from the entries for March 1837, when he was in Barbados. Martin takes a tour of his estate and describes the hot climate of the island and how this affects the crops. A new steam engine has been purchased to power the mill on the plantation and he organises a naming ceremony for it. He writes, ?I said 'As I understand that the South Mill has been named Lady Martin, I think I cannot give a better name to the steam engine than by naming it 'Young Master'. This met with great applause and we all gave three hearty cheers... ?
