This is the frontispiece to James Grainger's work, 'The Sugar-Cane: A Poem,' and is an illustration of a cane stalk. Grainger was a trained surgeon. After serving with the army until 1753, he travelled to the Caribbean and settled on the island of St Christopher (St Kitts). He practised medicine there and also wrote this poem, first published in 1764, about the island's sugar industry. The poem was published in 4 books ? the planting and harvesting systems, the treatment of the slaves and the loading of the sugar onto the ships.
