This is the title page of Thomas Roughley's 'The Jamaica Planter's Guide,' a manual for those wishing to establish successful plantations in Jamaica, published in 1823. It includes practical information about the design of estates, the importance of a good water supply and the techniques needed to harvest crops. Roughley was not an abolitionist and supported the use of slave labour on the plantations. He did, however, advocate more humane treatment, encouraging planters not to use violence and to reward the workforce with rum or provisions.
