This is the title page of Robert Wedderburn's work "The Horrors of Slavery." Wedderburn was the illegitimate child of James Wedderburn, a wealthy plantation owner, and Rosanna, an enslaved woman working on Wedderburn?s estate. Rosanna was sold to another plantation owner, Lady Douglas, when she was pregnant with Robert. A condition of the sale was that the child should be born free. Wedderburn, however, was shunned by his paternal family, who felt that he had no right to the Wedderburn name. He travelled as a sailor to England in 1778 and became a radical Christian, speaking out against slavery. He published ?The Horrors of Slavery? in 1824.
