Extract from the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano. Here Equiano describes how he came to be on the ship the 'Charming Sally,' under the captaincy of James Doran. Equiano had been enslaved to Michael Pascal, an officer in the Royal Navy, and had seen military action with him in the Seven Years War. Pascal had promised to free Equiano after the War but instead sold him on to Doran. Equiano was also cheated out of the 'prize money' that he was expecting to receive for his time in action. He records his distress at remaining a slave and finding himself bound once more for the West Indies.
