Sketch of Mount Pelée in Martinique, drawn in about 1808 by Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès, an naval officer under General le Comte d'Houdetot. The British and French were involved in struggles to control the island of Martinique through much of the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was finally restored to France by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The volcano Mount Pelée is the highest peak on the island and is 4,438 feet above sea level.
