Martinique is of volcanic origin and there are five or six extinct craters on the island. This sketch depicts a lake which has formed in one of these craters on Mount Pelée. The crater was located about 12 miles to the north west of the town of St Pierre, and was about 200 yards wide and about 800 feet deep. The sketch was drawn by Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès in c.1809.
