Sketch of the peaks of the Pitons du Carbet mountain range. It has been drawn from the perspective of Port de France, the principal port on the island in the 19th century. It became the capital of Martinique in 1902 after the town of Saint Pierre was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée. The sketch was drawn by Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès, a French Naval officer who was stationed on the island in the early 1800s.
