An aquatint by the French artist Louis Belanger (1736-1816) of the Flat Bridge across the Rio Cobre river near Spanish Town in Jamaica. The first bridge built here was constructed in wood by the Spanish shortly after the island's discovery, but it and subsequent wooden bridges were frequently washed away by the strong current. In 1800 the bridge was redesigned by Thomas Wilson and re-built from stone.
