This view by John Irving is from the terrace of Fort Fincastle, situated on the hill above the town of Nassau on New Providence island (in the Bahamas). The fort was built in 1793 and had a commanding view of the harbour. Its 126 foot water tower, which was more than 200 feet above sea level, was the highest point on the island. It also had a view of Fort Charlotte, one of the largest of the forts in Nassau, which was built to defend the north west of the island against invaders.
