View in Old North Sound, Antigua

Artist: Johnson, J.
Medium: Engraving
Date: 1827

This is a view of the island of Antigua. The landscape of the island is mostly flat terrain but this is broken up by a number of mountainous ranges like the one in the picture. The mill yard and sugar works on the estate of Captain Freeman can be seen in the foreground with other plantation works in the middle distance, and the Monks Hill fortifications in the background on top of the left peak. On the left of the picture can be seen a chapel built by the Moravian missionaries in the grounds of Samuel Otts' estate. Below this structure are the slaves' houses, sheltered by coconut and tamarind trees.
