This is a watercolour of the Lucky Valley Estate, Clarendon, Jamaica, by William Berryman. He produced over 300 pencil and watercolour studies of the people, landscape and buildings of Jamaica over a period of 8 years. Berryman intended to make engravings of many of these drawings but died before he could complete the task. He apparently made 5 drawings of the Lucky Valley Estate, although this view, which was taken from the west, appears to be the only one that survives. It depicts the estate buildings, some of which can be identified - from left; the old overseer's house, the new overseer's house (concealed by trees), the trash house, corn store, cattle pen, cooper's shop, hospital, Mr Miller's house, works, mill house, the boiling and still houses, rum store, piggery and poultry house with sheep pen.
