In Britain the Abolitionist cause progressed throughout the 18th century. The more the public knew about the conduct of the planters and the day to day practice of slavery the more the pressure grew on the Government to end its excesses. Groups such as the Peckham Ladies African and Anti Slavery Association encouraged their readers to boycott West Indian sugar since it had been produced by slave labour.
