This plan shows the approaches to Old and New London Bridges. The protective struts ('starlings') at the base of the old bridge were lower than that of the new one, and large traffic was often hindered in its progress downriver. The elevation provided below the plan of the new five-arch structure shows how the ground level has been raised, making it necessary to bridge Tooley Street and Thames Street.
