[Plan of property on Budge Row] 120B
Medium: Pen and ink on paper
This plan comes from a rent book belonging to the Mercers' Company. One of the most prominent city livery companies, the Mercers' dealt primarily in textiles. Having amassed great wealth, they began to buy property in the City of London, which they then leased to tenants. This is a plan of property on Budge Row, so called because the "budge" (lamb-skin) dealers used to live here. This narrow alleyway used to form part of the Roman Watling Street.
