The Duchess of Kingston was tried in Westminster Hall for bigamy and was found guilty, having married Augustus Harvey in 1744 before becoming the wife of the Duke of Kingston. The scandal was much enjoyed by the public who bought tickets for the five-day trial. Claiming the benefit of peerage she left the court unpunished and went into exile.
