This ground plan was published in Campbell's 'Vitruvius Britannicus'. The title appears in English and French, alongside the scale bar, at the foot of the plate. One of the great Pall Mall mansions, York House was designed and built in the 1760s by Mathew Brettingham for Edward Augustus Duke of York. Refurbished by Robert Adam in 1780, the house was occupied by the War Office from 1807 to 1855.
