Kings College was founded in 1828 as a rival institution to University College, London. It was inaugurated by the Duke of Wellington, the Archbishops of the Church of England, and 30 Bishops of the Church of England. Built to the designs of Robert Smirke, the college was opened in 1831. Space is given to a museum, libraries and lecture rooms.
