Cutler Boulter (on the building), copied by Rd Bate Esq from a drawing in possession of Mr Upcott
Artist: Bate, R.D.
Medium: Pen and ink on paper
This picture illustrates a buiding used by the Cutler Boulter Charity in Deptford.
The Charity provided support for the sick and elderly in the locality.
Despite Deptford's reputation as a major industrial centre in the 18th and 19th centuries, the large majority of the families who lived in the area were poor. Most of the men were unskilled labourers doing seasonal work at the dockyards.
