Interior of St Nicholas Church, Deptford, Communion Table
View of the interior of St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Lower Deptford, with the communion table depicted in the background. It appears that a marriage is in progress.
There has been a church on this site since the Norman Conquest, and parts of the present building date from the 14th century. Although it was substantially rebuilt in 1697, the work seems to have been badly executed, necessitating further renovation in 1740. The church suffered severe bomb damage during the Second World War and was extensively restored by Reverend Kenneth Francis in 1958. The interior boasts fine carving by the master craftsman, Grinling Gibbons. Christopher Marlowe, the influential 17th century playwright, lies buried in the church cemetery.
