This picture depicts the Silk Mills at Deptford.

Although the site may be modest in appearence, it has a long and eventful history. Records indicate that a building existed here before 1371, milling corn. During the 15 and 16th centuries the site was known to produce metal goods and armour for the military. The mill then returned to milling corn in the 18th century, continuing to do so until 1807. For a short period of time the mill was then used for making armour, until silk thread manufacturing commenced in 1824. Much of the mill was demolished in 1937, and the site was further cleared to make way for the Docklands Light Railway extension in 1997.
