Brancepeth Castle
The castle was founded in Saxon times and was owned by the Neville family until 1569. The castle was then confiscated by the Crown following a plot by the Nevilles to overthrow Elizabeth I. It was held by the Crown until James I passed it to the Carr family, who were earls of Somerset.
A subsequent resident, Sir Henry Bellaysyse, had a daughter called Mary, whose tale of unrequited love for a local young man is forever preserved in the folk song Bobby Shafto.
