Durham Castle
This Motte and Bailey castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1072. Successive earls of Northumberland renovated and extended it, and gave it to the prince bishops who serviced Durham cathedral. Since 1832 it has been occupied by University College, the founding college of the University of Durham.
