Finchale Prior
Finchale Priory was founded, in effect, by St Godric, the colourful pirate-turned-pilgrim-turned hermit. In the early years of the 12th century, it became a priory closely linked to its parent monastery at Durham Cathedral. For the monks of Durham, Finchale came to serve as a holiday retreat. Unlike at Bearpark, most of what Grimm drew here in the 18th century still survives today.
