Stephen Thompson's letterpress accompanying his photograph of Hatfield House describes "A jessamine tree in full flower, sweet-scented, and nebulous with white star-like blossoms, mantling the quaintly carved doorway of an Elizabethan house..."

Hatfield House was built by Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury, although it's history as a Royal Palace dates back to 1497.
