"'A Good Start' (J. A. Pollock, Belfast - Silver Medal). A capital yachting picture, breezy, and full of life, and reminding us of West's charming yachting studies. In this photograph the sky is in harmony with the water, a happy consummation not always attainable. Mr Pollock tells us that in order to secure the view he was compelled to hold his whole-plate camera in his hands during the exposure of the plate. A shutter working at one-eightieth of a second was used, and the lens was a Taylor's rapid rectilinear working at f/16."
